Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word which is pronounced I YUR VADE A and means Ayur (life) and Veda (science of knowledge) translating to “Science of Life”. It is a holistic health system that originates from India and has been in existence for 5000 years. Ayurveda emphasizes restoring and maintaining a harmonious mind/body/spirit connection to ensure optimal health and longevity. This science teaches us that everything we need to know about ourselves is within us, and with an understanding of the interconnectedness of these symptoms, we can heal ourselves on all levels.

A couple of aspects that stands out and separates Ayurveda from Western medicine is the uniqueness or focus on one’s individuality and the root cause of “dis-ease” as opposed to the symptom. By having an understanding of one’s constitution referred to as one’s dosha, which is a makeup of various elements. One is able to address the imbalance by integrating lifestyle practices best to fit one’s needs in order to create balance. What fits for one doesn’t necessarily fit for all, is ayurvedic philosophy. One can achieve this through lifestyle practices (such as establishing a daily routine or Dinacharya referred to in Sanskrit, dietary changes, yoga, meditation) the use of herbal remedies, and a wide variety of time tested Ayurvedic treatments.
